Otitan! Wayne Rooney’s Man United exit looks doubtful as no clubs want him

Wayne Rooney was supposed to be leaving Manchester United this summer but an exit is looking unlikely.

The Mirror report that suitors are hard to come by for the 31-year-old forward. Everton were linked with their former star in the closing months of the season but haven’t followed up with those declarations of interest.

Another year on the bench?

The biggest stumbling blocks for Rooney are the fee that United would command and his high wages.

One of the best-paid players in the world, Rooney’s weekly pay packet is £300,000. He’s probably accepted that a wage cut is inevitable after a stark decline in his playing ability but hasn’t received an offer remotely similar.

There were stories linking him with a move to the Chinese Super League but that’s now looking extremely unlikely. The Beijing government’s new 100 percent tax on foreign players has made free-spending clubs think twice.

Plus, Rooney isn’t exactly keen on taking his young family to the Far East.
He has two years left on his United deal and the club isn’t prepared to let him leave for a cut-price fee. They’re also not going to pay off the rest of his contract and release him. It means another year of the bench and the stands.
