Arsene Wenger held talks with Jean Seri’s agent last week about a possible transfer to Arsenal, according to one journalist.

The Guardian’s deputy sport news editor Ed Aarons has taken to Twitter to claim that Wenger met with the Nice midfielder’s agent to discuss a possible deal for the 25-year-old.

He also claims that French side Nice are holding out for a transfer fee of at least €40m (£34.8m) for the Ivorian, and that Italian side Roma are also interested in the player.

Aarons tweeted: “Arsene Wenger held talks with Jean Seri’s agent last week. Nice holding out for 40m euros after rejecting bid from Roma over weekend #afc.”

Seri was a regular fixture in the Nice team last season and scored seven goals and made nine assists in 34 Ligue 1 games for the French side.

Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Wenger looks to transform his side into genuine title challengers next season.

The Gunners confirmed the capture of left-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke on a free transfer on Tuesday as their first summer signing.

The north London side finished fifth in the Premier League and won the FA Cup last term before Wenger committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.
