ONDO: Man bags 2-month jail term for stealing N1, 000 maize

Busuyi Ajibola, a middle-aged man has been sentenced to two-month jail term by an Akure Magistrate’s Court for stealing N1,000 worth of maize at Ago Ego on Idanre Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital on July 30, 2017.
The crime committed by the convict (described as a notorious thief) was contrary to and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Cap 37. Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006, according to prosecutors.
Before judgement was passed on the defendant, his counsel, Grace Obanigba, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that the convict who pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge levelled against him has a wife and kids.
However, Mrs. Oluwafunmi Edwin, the magistrate, after taking a closer look at the charge and the fact of the case, said it was proven beyond reasonable doubt that the convict committed the act deliberately and as such should be detained for 8-weeks.
